Boris Johnson latest news: PM apologises for attending Downing Street party at PMQs, saying ‘I thought it was a work event’

Is this the beginning of the end for Boris?

Olivia Utley, Assistant Comment Editor: “I think it’s probably the beginning of the end, but the end could be pretty long and drawn out.

“I think that it’ll take I think will we might see a period of calm after this, actually when we get a bit of a get a bit of a bounce when the restrictions ends, but then the next crisis could well finish the Prime Minister.”

Tony Diver, Political Correspondent: “I think that the outcome of this inquiry would be the thing determines that – not to sound like Boris Johnson.

“But I think people I was talking to about this inquiry say that it’s going to be ‘killer’, that it’s going to be the thing that finally finishes the PM off.

“So it’s all very well for him to enable a period of quiet on this story to say ‘let’s wait for the outcome of the inquiry’. The problem with that is that it builds up a lot of pressure behind the scenes when the inquiry is finally released, if it does show that he knew he was breaking the rules and he knew people around him were breaking the rules.”

Mutaz Ahmed, Telegraph journalist: “I think he did what he needed to do today but there are a few flashpoints left to confront.

“There’s the findings of the inquiry, there’s the local elections that are coming up and there’s the summer – and things always happen in the summer. So yes, the bigger picture is worrisome for him to say the least.”
